As part of its further scientific development, Ghent University plans to recruit for its Ghent University Global Campus (GUGC) in Songdo (South Korea):
- A full-time post as assistant professor or associate professor/ full professor / senior full professor (combination of a full appointment at GUGC with 10 % professorship at Ghent University, Department of Food Technology, Safety and Health)
- Discipline Food Technology, with specialisation in Innovative Protein Technology
- At GUGC, Centre for Food Chemistry and Technology, Faculty Bio-science Engineering
ASSIGNMENT
The assignment concerns academic teaching (in English), academic research and carrying out academic services in the discipline of Food Technology, with special focus on Innovative Protein Technology. You work in the GUGC Centre for Food Chemistry and Technology (https://www.ugent.be/globalcampus/en/research/food) and in collaboration with the home campus Department Food Technology, Safety and Health, Faculty of Bio-Science Engineering (https://www.ugent.be/bw/foodscience/en). The mission of the Centre for Food Chemistry and Technology is to contribute to the research fields of Food Technology, Food Chemistry, and Food Microbiology. Current research topics include: microplastics in food, food proteins (allergens in food and food digestion, insect protein), non-destructive analysis of foods for detecting food fraud and food authenticity and antimicrobial strategies for fruit and vegetables. The members of the Centre for Food Chemistry and Technology contribute to theoretical and practical courses at GUGC. The Centre prepares students (undergraduate and graduate) for their careers in food science, food production, R&D and academia.
Academic education
You lecture various course units in the discipline of food sciences, more specifically “experimental food biochemistry”, “technology of non-animal products”, and “Modern Aspects of Food” at undergraduate level (Bachelor Food Technology). Changes in courses is possible in the future in function of the needs in the Centre. You guide students in Bachelor Food Technology, supported by Teaching Assistants.
Academic Research
You develop a research line in the discipline of Food Technology, with focus on Innovative Food Protein Technology. In the evolution of a more sustainable diet and the on-going protein transition, innovative proteins (from various sources) need to be further processed towards food applications. Research should focus on studying the impact of processing such raw materials on protein functionality and how the physico-chemical properties of such innovative proteins can be applied in the development of food products. The research is complementary to the current research conducted at GUGC and UGent, Department Food Technology, Safety and Health.
Academic services
You take part in the internal and external service provision of GUGC :
- Undertake internal roles of responsibility e.g. contribute to committees and working groups, act as a mentor.
- Participate in internal initiatives/events to the benefit of the University e.g. open days, outreach activities, student placements.
PROFILE
Experience
- You have already conducted eminent academic research in the given discipline, which is clearly reflected In high quality publication in peer reviewed scientific journals;
- You are capable of initiating, supervising and acquiring the necessary funding for academic research;
- You are didactically skilled to teach university students to develop academic competences;
- Your level of English is good.
- Recommended are:
- International mobility, among other things thanks to research stays at institutions external to the one where you acquired your highest academic degree;
- Positively evaluated experience in provided academic lecturing;
- Knowledge of Korean language;
- Professionalisation of education.

Admission requirements
- You are a thesis-based doctorate holder. Upon evaluation of a foreign (non-EU) diploma, a certificate of equivalence may still have to be requested at NARIC;
- You have at least two years of postdoctoral experience on 1 December
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
Depending on the specific profile of the selected candidate, the degree of assistant professor (tenure track), associate professor, full professor or senior full professor is awarded. This will be decided by the University Board as proposed by the Faculty Board.
We offer you an appointment with renewable duration for a maximum of 5 years. This is a tenure track position.
The recruitment is possible no sooner than 1st of December 2021.

SELECTION PROCEDURE
After the final application date, all received applications will be sent to the faculty assessment committee assembled for this vacancy. This committee will first evaluate the application files. Therefore it will match all elements of the file against the required expertise for the position in terms of education, research and scientific service. Based on this deliberation, relevant candidates will be shortlisted to be invited for further selection (interview, possible presentation or test lecture, …). Afterwards, the committee will rank the suitable candidates and present this ranking to the Faculty Board. The advice of the Faculty Board will then be presented to the University Board for approval.
Candidates are asked to further discuss their 5 most impactful academic achievements. Next to academic publications, the candidate is thus also able to show merit of knowledge transfer by academic dissemination, social valorisation, public awareness, seminars or conference presentations. These competences are also taken into account when evaluating the candidates.
The evaluation of the required international mobility is broad and partly takes the gender perspective into account, thus not only considering longer stays abroad by also other forms of internationalisation.
Pregnancy leave, prolonged sick leave, parental leave, filial leave or other forms of absence are taken into account when evaluating the available time for the realisation of academic output.
