Get to know honorary doctor Mary Beard in Bozar

(22-03-2022) On Thursday 7 April, Ghent University and Bozar are putting together a unique evening with dame Mary Beard.

On 19 March 2021, Dame Mary Beard was awarded an honorary doctorate by Ghent University and the faculty of Arts and Philosophy. Due to the corona crisis, the honorary doctorates were awarded digitally. On 7 April 2022, we will be glad to finally be able to present professor Beard to you in person!

The British Mary Beard is renowned internationally as an expert on classical antiquity. She is a professor at the University of Cambridge, a TV personality and the author of numerous popularising but erudite books on antiquity. During a unique evening at Bozar, she will speak with Thomas Vanderveken about her unusual life, antiquity and contemporary times, power and feminism.

Professor Beard, like no other, is able to show how antiquity remains relevant today as a culture that not only helped shape contemporary society, but also holds up a mirror to it. Her famous manifesto Women & Power became a bestseller, both domestic and abroad. This coming fall, she will publish her next work Twelve Caesars: Images of Power from the Ancient World to the Modern. In this book, Mary Beard will shed some light on the way images of Roman autocrats have influenced art, culture and the representation of power for over 2000 years.
