Daniel Biltereyst is Professor in Film and Media Studies at the Department of Communication Studies, Ghent University, Belgium, where he teaches film and media history, and cultural media studies. Besides being Director of the Centre for Cinema and Media Studies (CIMS) and an elected member of the Academia Europaea, he is also linked to the HoMER network. He is the main supervisor of the Hercules/FWO-funded Cinema Ecosystem (CINECOS)project, aiming at building an open access data platform for cinema history in Flanders and Belgium (2018-24, see Cinema Belgica). He’s a co-supervisor of the Horizon 2020 EUMEPLAT project (European Media Platforms), more precisely leading WP on the history of the European movie market. He is also the co-supervisor of the EU-funded cinema heritage project ‘Dialogue for Cinema as Cultural Heritage in Adana’. Biltereyst is also involved as a film programmer for Film-Plateau (Ghent University’s film club), the inter-faculty film club Cinéssential, and Luminarias.
Biltereyst supervised more than 20 doctoral research projects, mostly in the field of his expertise (film and media history, historical media audience research, media censorship and controversy, new cinema history).
